The Complete Guide to Student Finance Loan for UK Residents

Student finance loan can sometimes feel overwhelming and confusing, especially for those just starting their
academic and professional journey. But it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re beginning your application,
preparing your documents, getting ready for enrollment, or even mentally preparing to take the next step,
understanding how student finance works can ease your concerns, boost your confidence, and help you
make informed decisions.

At Platinum Education Services, we’ve helped thousands of students enrol in university through a
smooth, stress-free process. In this guide, we’ll break down how student finance works, step by step.

What is SFE Loan?

SFE stands for Student Finance England, the UK government’s funding system that provides loans to
eligible students. It helps cover the costs of attending university through two main types of support:
● Tuition Fee Loans
● Maintenance Loans (Living Costs)
This ensures that financial barriers don’t stop you from pursuing higher education.

Types of Student Finance Loan

1. Tuition Fee Loans: Cover up to £9,535 per year to pay for university tuition.
2. Maintenance Loans: Help cover everyday living costs such as rent, food, and transportation.
3. Additional Grants: Some students may qualify for extra support, such as:
○ Childcare Grant
○ Parents’ Learning Allowance
○ Disabled Students’ Allowance
○ Adult Dependants’ Grant

Eligibility for Student Finance Loan

While Student Finance England Loan primarily supports UK nationals, you may still be eligible if you meet
certain criteria:
● UK or EU citizen
● Have Indefinite Leave to Remain
● Hold Refugee or Humanitarian Protection status
● Have lived in the UK for at least 3 years before your course starts
● EU/EEA national with Settled or Pre-Settled Status
(For Students who have Pre-Settled Status they would need to apply for student finance first
before university as the government might not fund them in some cases)

Application Process

To apply for Student Finance England Loan - SFE:
1. Go to https://www.gov.uk/student-finance
2. Set up your SFE loan account
3. Complete the application and submit the required documents
4. Wait for confirmation And All Done!

Repayment Process

Many students worry about repaying their student loans. However, repayments only begin once you’re
earning above the repayment threshold of £25,000 per year, and you only repay 9% of what you earn
above that amount.

Example:
● If you earn £25,000/year, you pay nothing
● If you earn £25,100/year, you pay 9% of £100, which is £9/year or 75p/month
● If you earn £35,000/year, you pay 9% of £10,000, which is £900/year or £75/month
